Tyson Layoff FAQ

(Last revised: January 5, 2026)

This section provides answers to common questions about unemployment benefits, Rapid Response services, job fairs, training options, and other support available to Tyson Fresh Meats employees and their families. The information below is intended to help you understand what to expect and where to get help as you plan your next steps.

Are translation services available?

Yes. Translation and language assistance services are available upon request at no cost. If you need information in another language or need an interpreter to access any of our services, please let staff know as early as possible so arrangements can be made.

Should I file for unemployment before my last scheduled day of work?

No. Filing a claim before you are actually separated from your job can delay your benefits. You cannot file until the day after your last day of work. Special filing instructions and next steps will be provided during the Rapid Response sessions scheduled at Tyson, with staff from the Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solutions Panhandle available to assist. Tyson will schedule the specific date and time for each Rapid Response session.

Am I eligible for unemployment benefits?

You may be eligible if you are laid off through no fault of your own. Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) decides based on your work history, wages, and reason for separation. You must also:

  • Work through your last scheduled day in order to be eligible for unemployment benefits
  • Be able and available for full-time work
  • Actively search for work
  • Register on WorkInTexas.com within 3 business days of applying

How do I apply for unemployment?

You should attend a Rapid Response session at the Tyson plant. At this session, you will get instructions from the Texas Workforce Commission on how to file your claim and request payments.

Should I quit now and find a new job?

Leaving your job prior to your last scheduled day of work, could affect your unemployment eligibility for unemployment. To stay eligible for unemployment benefits, you should continue working through your last scheduled day. You can still look for and apply to other jobs while you remain employed, but leaving early can affect your eligibility.

How long does it take to receive unemployment payments?

If approved, your first payment is usually issued within about 4 weeks after you apply. Delays can happen if TWC needs more information from you or your employer.

There is a required waiting week (the first payable week is unpaid, but may be paid later if you return to full-time work or exhaust benefits).

Payments come every two weeks after approval, You must make a payment request every two weeks.

How much unemployment money can I receive?

Your weekly benefit amount depends on how much you earned during your base period. Texas sets a minimum and maximum weekly benefit each year. For claims with effective dates on or after October 5, 2025, the weekly benefit range is:

    • Minimum weekly benefit: $75
    • Maximum weekly benefit: $605

Your actual benefit will be calculated based on your reported wages within a range. You can receive benefits for up to 26 weeks.

How will the Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solutions Panhandle communicate with me?

All messages from the Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solutions Panhandle contain important information about your benefits and job search, so be sure to read all correspondence carefully.

The Texas Workforce Commission will contact you by mail and by email. Workforce Solutions Panhandle may contact you by email, by phone, or by text.

If you need an interpreter or language assistance to access any of these communications or services, please let staff know so arrangements can be made.
