Program Overview

The Program, titled “Externships for Teachers”, is funded by the Texas Workforce Commission’s Externships for Teachers and aims to provide middle and high school Teachers, Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Teachers, and Institutions of Higher Learning (IHE) Teachers with experiential learning opportunities in collaboration with regional Employers.

The Program’s objectives include providing Teachers with 10 to 15 days of participation in Externships with regional Employers, facilitating Pre-Externship Orientation sessions, encouraging the creation of Lesson Plans based on Externship experiences, and fostering collaboration between Education and Industry.

Teacher Responsibilities

Attendance: Teachers agree to participate in the Program for a minimum of ten (10) to fifteen (15) days, with at least four (4) hours per day. Teachers understand and acknowledge that, to accommodate the full externship timeframe, they may be assigned to more than one Employer. This may include completing portions of the externship with different Employers, with time divided across worksites as determined by the Program.

Pre-Externship Orientation: Teachers must attend a Pre-Externship Orientation to understand Program requirements, expectations, and placement logistics.

Externship Activities: During the Externship, Teachers will engage in activities at Employer worksites. Teachers may complete these activities with one or multiple Employers, as assigned, and must maintain a Time Log documenting hours, locations, and activities as evidence of their participation and learning outcomes.

Post-Externship Workshop: Following the Externship, Teachers will attend a Post-Externship Workshop to discuss outcomes, reflect on experiences across all assigned Employers, create Lesson Plans, and evaluate their experiences.

Lesson Plans: Teachers will develop Lesson Plans based on Externship experiences, which may include insights from multiple Employers, aligning with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and engaging students in real-world applications.

Collaboration and Feedback: Teachers will collaborate with Employers, maintain an Activities Journal, and provide feedback through Evaluations to enhance future Externship projects.
